The establishment of Cabot Morgan Farm was the fulfillment of Martha Morse's life long love of horses. Marti had owned the geldings, Townshend I Declare and Bildair's Roscoe. By 1990, with the building of her farm in West Newbury, Massachusetts completed, she wanted to venture into the world of breeding Morgans. Under the auspices of her trainer Rick Lane, who then operated his training stable in Gray, Maine, Marti started buying horses. And what an amazing collection it was! JW Charity, Rumbrook Mirage, Liberation Starbrite, Forty Carats, Bery Banke La De Da, and LCS Pepperpot headlined her stellar group of mares.
In 1991, the addition of the irresistible young stallion Futurity French Command to her string catapulted the Cabot name to national acclaim as French's first foal crop (1993) produced Cabot French Kiss, Cabot French Lieutenant, and Cabot French Pepper, all who became multiple World Champions. The multi-titled champion, Cedar Creek Harlequin was purchased in 1996 to stand to the public after French's book was closed. With his elegant, exotic look, he was also the perfect choice to cross with the French daughters. Business exploded and with French's book limited to 20, Harley quickly booked 30 mares.
As business boomed, it became apparent that Rick was outgrowing the facility he was in and in 1997 his plans for purchasing a farm in Falmouth large enough to house both the breeding and training programs were well underway. Marti's untimely death in the spring of 1997 was both a personal loss and a professional challenge as Rick moved to the new farm with twenty-two horses and the commitment to carry on Marti's dream of breeding champion Morgan horses bearing the Cabot prefix.
